We planted our first vegetable garden today! We don't know much about it, but we are excited to be living in a climate that is mild year round and thought we would give it a try. 
Sean cleared the gravel and put down some edging and soil mixture to make a raised garden.

So here it is. Not much to look at now, but we are really excited about it. We planted corn, carrots, watermelon and a few herbs today. On the other side of the yard we plan to plant pumpkins, cantaloupe and lettuce. Yes, it is all random, but that's what you get when you let your little ones have a voice in the matter. :)
I'll continue to post pictures. We welcome any tips. :)

WOW!!! I love love love the picture of the girls pouring together! I can't wait to see it grow! My only tip is this: Papa Bear from Berenstein Bears talked to his pumpkin to make it grow...=)
Corrie- If you really want tips, I would suggest to you that when you plant seedlings, add some bone meal to the soil prior to putting the seedlings in. Also, get some vegetable fertilizer and make a little trench either around the seedling or in a row about 1.5 inches away from the seedling or seeds. pour some fertilizer into your trench and cover it back up with soil. This way when you water the fertilizer will soak into the soil, and not burn the roots or splash up and burn the leaves of your plant. To have sweeter veggies, add some white sugar to the hole where you put your plant. And finally, watch out for pests! I don't know what pests you have out there, but some of them can be very sneaky. If you find you have pests, try to figure out which pest it is in order to remedy it without damage to the rest of your little eco-system and plants. I love gardening and hope you have much success with it. We are trying to garden for the first time in Colorado this summer... and it will be much harder than Nebraska and Illinois! Enjoy!
